Hitler was the German Political Leader of the Nazi Party and initiated WW2 during his dictatorship of Germany from 1933-1945. He is responsible for the deaths of millions of people during WW2, and took his own life as the war came to an end against his favour in 1945.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948):


Gandhi led India’s independence movement from British rule throughout the 30’s and 40’s by means of non-violent protests. He was and still is considered the father of the nation after he was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu extremist who objected his tolerance for Muslims.

Independence for India and Pakistan 1947:

India achieved its long sought independence from British rule when a partition was set forth in the Indian independence act 1947 which removed the crown rule. From midnight on August 14th 1947 India legally became India and Pakistan.
Vietnam war 1955- 1975:

The Vietnam war was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. It started because of the U.S.’s strategy of containment during the cold war, which aimed to prevent communism. From 1950, the US supported South Korea in the war against the communist North backed by China and the USSR.

On the 7th of December 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Japanese intended to destroy important American fleet units to prevent them from interfering with Japan conquering Southeast Asia.

Work on the New York subway begins on the first section from City Hall to the Bronx in the year 1900. It was financed by the issue of rapid transit bonds by the City of New York and because no company was willing to take the risk of such a large project.
Electric Cars, 25% of all cars that were sold in 1900 were electric cars. It will be interesting to see how many years it takes for 25% of all cars sold to be fully electric or Hybrid.
Small Pox Epidemic, In Kentucky a small pox epidemic was raging with hundreds of people stricken. The mortality rate was 20% and health authorities demanded that every person in the state be vaccinated.

The civil rights movement in America was a struggle to enforce legal and constitutional rights for African Americans that were already in place for white Americans. The movement was born when Rosa Parks, an African American woman, refused to give up her bus seat for a white man.

Chinas recovery from war, 1949–52:

In 1949 China's economy was suffering from the effects of warfare. Many mines and factories had been damaged or destroyed. Transportation, communication, and power systems had been destroyed or had deteriorated because of lack of maintenance. Agriculture was disrupted, and food production was severely low.
50’s Boom:



The American economy prospered in the 50’s by growing 37%. Military veterans were able to afford access to college education as a result of the GI bill, which led to a great number of highly educated employees for the work force.

Due to rising incomes and persuasive marketing there was a rise in consumer spending in America after the second world war. Americans enjoyed a higher standard of living compared to most other countries at the time.

Nuclear Power 1942:

The reactor generated the first electricity from nuclear energy on December 20, 1951. Enrico Fermi led a group of scientists in initiating the first self- sustaining nuclear chain reaction. The historic event, which occurred on December 2, 1942, in Chicago, is recreated in this painting.

The Raytheon Corporation produced the first commercial microwave oven in 1954; it was called the 1161 Radarange. It was large, expensive, and had a power of 1600 watts. The first domestic microwave oven was produced in 1967 by Amana (a division of Raytheon).

Modernism 1935-1950:


Idea of modernism is summarised by less is more. It’s design features consisted of clean lines, gentle organic curves, a love for different materials. A lot of modernist items were designed to be mass produced.
America became less of an isolationist country and became more present on the world stage until the grate depression struck allowing for more trade and more availability of goods

Streamlining 1930’s – 1950’s:

Streamlining could be seen throughout America from the early thirties to late fifties. It emerged from the art deco movement and was inspired by aerodynamic design. Key features in streamline design incudes emphasized curving forms and long horizontal lines. Streamline objects often looked like they were in motion while placed still.
Pop Art Approx. 1958 – 1972:

Pop art emerged in the UK and America during the late fifties. Artists used images and icons that were popular in the modern world. The pop art style is based on simple bold images of everyday items.
Scandinavian design movement 1950’s:

While the signature features of Scandinavian design such as simplicity, minimalism and functionality emerged in the early 20th century, the movement flourished in the 1950’s especially throughout Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. A great example of Scandinavian design today would be Ikea.
